Baikuntapur Tarun Sangha (BTS) Sundarbans

SAVE is supporting the BTS School Support(BSS) Programme

This is a project which is aimed to provide tutorial assistance at free/or at a very nominal cost to 100-150 students belonging to households living below the poverty line (BPL), of grades V to X, studying in local High Schools. From each grade we will enroll a maximum of 20-25 students in a Coaching School.

Project Duration: BTS intends to set up 5 Centres every year and the minimum duration of the each centre is for a period of 10 years. However the sponsor can choose to support one / multiple centres on an annual / bi-annual basis.

Project Purpose: The project is targeted to benefit the children of the poorest of the poor fishermen, forest-dependent, Tiger-Crocodile affected Widowers(TCWs), out-migrants and daily-wage-earners’ families living in the coastal and rural Sundarbans in South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal.
Here we intend to serve the S.C., S.T., Tribal communities, Fisher-Folks, Women headed families (Crocodile and Tiger widows), Migrants etc. many of whom are landless, a cycle of miseries surrounds them and they earn their livelihoods from meagre daily wages, collecting and selling non timber forest produce, fishing, pawn seed collection, local handicrafts, selling fuel woods etc.
As school education is free these days, they send the children to the local schools. But the parents and other family members are mostly illiterate and due to lack of adequate financial means they cannot engage private tuitions for the children. As a result, they often tend to drop-out because of lack of guidance at home with school work and homework assignments. They fall behind in the schools and feel demotivated in their studies.
There are also many students who because of their keen academic interests and passion for learning continue to pursue their studies uninterruptedly against all the odds. But in the higher grades (like VII, VIII, IX and X) due to lack tuition, books & educational materials etc. they are unable to cope up with the pace of instruction in schools and develop irrepairable gaps in learning.

Thus, the target of this project is twofold:

a) Reduce School Dropouts and

b) Help hardworking and meritorious students secure good scores in the annual examinations and graduate Secondary Board examinations with high first division or star marks (>75% on an average) for better future higher studies.
